After chatting with Curry, I stumble across another surprising way that technology might help us with ageing. You can now summon an artificially aged self-portrait on a smartphone or hang out with a convincing avatar of an older you in a virtual reality simulation. While this sounds like harmless fun, studies show it can help narrow that ‘fundamental emotional disconnect’ between your present and future self – and that can inspire you to plan better for later life, exercise more, procrastinate less and even behave more ethically.

When I ask Curry if she would like to spend some quality time with a virtual version of her future self, she laughs. ‘At my age, I think I already am my future self,’ she says. ‘I’m happy and content with who I am now, and where I’m at.’ Hearing those words from anyone, young or old, always lifts my spirits. But hearing them from Curry, who has 30 years on me, brings to mind a question that has been scraping at the back of my mind since that hockey tournament in Gateshead: has she found happiness because – or in spite – of her age?
